The Expo SNS Supporters, indispensable players in every Expo event, small and big, gathered again to promote the Third International Planning Meeting held on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul.
Around 15 Expo SNS Supporters spread information on the meeting in Korea and abroad by posting up-to-date, interesting, and witty SNS messages.

The Expo SNS Supporters have created a variety of SNS contents, promoting Yeosu Expo, all of which are offered in different languages. This time, the supporters not only reported on the events of the international planning meeting, but also held interviews with the delegates of participating countries, which they will post on their site.

Expo SNS Supporter Yun Hyerim, who emceed a live broadcast about the meeting, said, “SNS is a useful means of spreading information, enabling us to go beyond time, space and generation. I am very proud to use my talents to contribute to promoting Yeosu Expo.”

Les SNS Expos Supportes, sont les maillons indispensables de toutes les Expos, petits et grands, ils se sont réunis à nouveau pour promouvoir la Troisième réunion de planification Internationale qui se tenait le mercredi 8 février 2012, à l'Hôtel Shilla à Séoul.
Environ 15 SNS supporters ont diffusés des informations sur cette réunion en Corée et à l'étranger par les différentes voies possibles sur les réseaux sociaux.
Les SNS Supporters ont créé une riche variété de contenus pour la promotion de Expo 2012 Yeosu, qu'ils ont offerts en différentes langues. Cette fois, les supporters ont non seulement rapportés sur les événements de la réunion de planification internationale, mais ont également eu des entretiens avec les délégués des pays participants.
La SNS Supporter Yun Hyerim, qui a animé une émission en direct sur la réunion, a déclaré, «SNS est un moyen utile de diffuser l'information, ce qui nous permet d'aller au delà du temps, l'espace et les générations. BIE-Cosmos prize agreement signed

Kang Dong-Suk, chairman of Yeosu Expo and Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales, Secretary General of the BIE, signed the BIE-Cosmos Prize agreement on February 9 in Yeosu during the Third International Planning Meeting.

A copy of the agreement is handed to Mr. Koichi Hiono, the Executive Director of Expo '90 Foundation which is the sponsor of the prize.

The prize will recognize not-for-profit, innovative projects from citizens and organizations around the world on the theme of Expo 2012.

It will be awarded within the framework of the upcoming Expo (May 12 – August 12, 2012), and nominees will have the chance to promote their projects at EXPO 2012 Yeosu. One winner will be awarded a monetary sum of 20,000 € (twenty thousand Euros) to fund the development of the recognized project.

The deadline for applications has been extended to February 28, 2012.

L'accord concernant le Prix BIE-Cosmos a été signé par Kang Dong-Suk, Président de Expo Yeosu, et Vicente González Loscertales, Secrétaire Général du BIE le 9 février dernier, à Séoul, à l'occasion de la Troisième Réunion de Planification de Expo Yeosu.
Une copie de l'accord a été transmise à M. Koichi Hiono, Directeur Exécutive de la Fondation Expo'90, Japon, qui est le sponsor de ce prix.
Le Prix BIE-Cosmos, EXPO 2012 Yeosu « Pour des côtes et des océans vivants » soutient des projets à but non lucratif, novateurs, émanant de la société civile et directement liés au thème de l'Expo.
Ce Prix sera remis au cours de la prochaine EXPO (12 mai – 12 août 2012) et les finalistes auront l'opportunité de promouvoir leurs projets à EXPO 2012 Yeosu. Le gagnant recevra une récompense en numéraire de 20.000 € (vingt mille euros) pour développer son projet.
La date limite pour le dépôt des candidatures a été prolongée au 28 février 2012.

Third International Planning Meeting of Expo 2012 Yeosu held in Seoul

More than 300 representatives from 101 countries and 9 international organizations participated in the Third International Planning Meeting of Expo 2012 Yeosu held on February 8, 2012 in Seoul.

Three months before the opening of the Expo on May 12, the Expo organizer hosted this three-day meeting to review the overall preparation process and inform participants of the progress made and the different procedures.

BIE Secretary General Vicente G. Loscertales welcomed at Incheon International Airport

Presentations on the installation and operation of the exhibition spaces, the Cyber Expo, the site operation, admission and safety management, transportation, accommodation and tourism, commercial activities and use of the Expo symbols, public relation activities, cultural events and forums and the Yeosu Declaration were made. The participants exchanged views with the organizer and put forward suggestions to facilitate their preparation.

Participants showed great interest in the Yeosu Declaration, which will be presented on the closing day of the Expo, as a declaration of the role of the ocean in fulfilling the sustainable development of economy and environment goals of the international community.
Bilateral meetings took place on February 7 between the organizer and participants to discuss individually the preparation of each country's participation to the Expo.

"An Expo is the result of an effort of international cooperation, and a successful Expo is the result of an effort that involves concerted action and mutual support. The real strength of Expos lies in the interdependence between participants and organisers and on managing it appropriately from both sides", said Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales, Secretary General of the BIE during his speech at the opening ceremony.

Furthermore, the College of Commissioners of Section comprised of the official representatives of participating countries was constituted and a Steering Committee representing the College of Commissioners was elected.

As part of the International Planning Meeting, participants visited on Thursday, February 9, the city of Yeosu and the exhibition site. 93 percent of the exhibition facilities and infrastructure have been completed.

The 93-day Expo, under the theme "Living Ocean and Coat," is aim to attract more than eight million visitors from all over the world. Until today, a total of 106 countries and international organizations have signed in for Expo Yeosu.

Troisième Réunion de Planification de Expo Yeosu à Seoul
Plus de 300 représentants venus de 101 pays et 9 organisations internationales ont participé à la Troisième Réunion de Planification de Expo Yeosu, qui s'est tenue à Séoul le 8 février 2012.
Trois mois avant l'ouverture de l'Expo, le 12 mai, une réunion de trois jours a été organisée pour informer les participants sur l'état d'avancement du projet et sur les différentes procédures de la participation.
Des présentations ont eu lieu sur : les installations et les opérations dans les espaces de l'exposition, la « Cyber Expo », l'admission sur le site et la gestion de la sécurité, le transport, le logement et le tourisme, les activités commerciales et l'utilisation des symboles de l'Expo, les activités de promotion, les événements culturels et les symposiums, ainsi que la « Déclaration de Yeosu ».
Les participants ont échangé leurs opinions avec l'organisateur et fait des suggestions dans le but de faciliter la préparation.
Les participants se sont intéressés particulièrement à « La Déclaration de Yeosu », qui sera présentée le jour de la clôture de l'Expo. Cette déclaration sur le rôle des océans dans le développement durable de l'économie et de l'environnement vise à répondre aux défis auxquels doit faire face la communauté internationale dans ce domaine.
Des réunions bilatérales entre l'organisateur et les participants ont été organisées le 7 février pour parler individuellement de la préparation et de la participation de chaque pays à l'Expo.
« Une Expo est le résultat d'un effort de la coopération internationale, et une Expo réussie est le résultat d'un effort qui implique des actions concertées et des soutiens mutuels, » a déclaré Vicente González Loscertales, Secrétaire Général du BIE, à l'ouverture de la réunion.
« La force réelle des Expos repose sur l'interdépendance entre les participants et les organisateurs et sur une gestion appropriée de la part des deux parties.»
Le Collège des Commissaires de Section, composé des représentants officiels des pays participants, a été établi. Les membres du Comité Directeur représentant le Collège des Commissaires ont également été élus.
Les participants ont visité la ville de Yeosu et le site de l'Expo dont 93 % des aménagements et des infrastructures est terminé.
L'Expo Yeosu, qui va durer 93 jours, sous le thème « Pour des côtes et des océans vivants : diversité des ressources et activités durables », a pour objectif d'attirer plus de 8 millions de visiteurs du monde entier.
A ce jour, 106 pays et organisations internationales ont confirmé leur participation à Expo Yeosu.

Pavilion of Romania - Pavillon de la Roumanie

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in his capacity as coordinator of the participation of Romania to the Expo 2012 Yeosu, Korea Republic, nominated for the concept expositionnel flag of Romania.

During the public procurement procedure aimed concluding a service contract to develop the concept of expositionnel Romania Pavilion at Expo 2012 and consulting for the implementation of this concept, offers were made by the company Graffiti BBDO SA and the company Arcsett SRL SC. It's supply of Arcsett SRL SC who was declared the winner.

The basic theme for the national concept with which Romania will present itself at the international exhibition is the Danube Delta, as part of the general theme of Expo 2012: "The living ocean and coast: diversity of resources and sustainable activities (The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable activities) ".

The concept of the participation of Romania to the Expo 2012 Yeosu of South Korea will mainly highlight:
- The uniqueness and ecological importance of the Danube Delta, as adjacent protected areas, caused by bio ethnodiversity and, in the context of sustainable development;
- How to facilitate sensory perception of the need to protect the Danube Delta Biosphere, and the natural beauty of the area;
- The method which we inform visitors about the global issue of sustainable development and measures to protect the Danube Delta, fauna and flora of the latter.

It will thus highlight the importance of the Danube, the river, alongside the Black Sea, is one of the major components of the natural environment against which we define the position of Romania on the European continent.

Le ministère des Affaires étrangères, en sa qualité de coordonnateur de la participation de la Roumanie à l'Expo 2012 Yeosu, de République de Corée, a désigné le concept expositionnel pour le pavillon de la Roumanie.
Lors de la procédure d'acquisition publique ayant pour objet la conclusion d'un contrat de services d'élaboration du concept expositionnel du pavillon de la Roumanie à l'Exposition internationale 2012 et de consulting pour la mise en pratique de ce concept, des offres ont été avancées par la compagnie Graffiti BBDO SA et la compagnie SC Arcsett SRL. C'est l'offre de la SC Arcsett SRL qui a été déclarée gagnante.

Le thème de base pour le concept national avec lequel la Roumanie se présentera à l'exposition internationale est le delta du Danube, s'inscrivant dans le thème général de l'Expo 2012: « L’océan vivant et la côte : diversité de ressources et activités soutenables (The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities) ».

Le concept de la participation de la Roumanie à l'Expo 2012 Yeosu de République de Corée mettra principalement en relief:
- le caractère unique et l'importance écologique du delta du Danube, tout comme des zones adjacentes protégées, engendrées par la bio et ethnodiversité, dans le contexte du développement durable;
- la manière de faciliter la perception sensorielle de la nécessité de protéger la biosphère du delta du Danube, ainsi que les beautés naturelles de la zone;
- le mode dont on informe les visiteurs au sujet de la problématique globale du développement durable et des mesures de protection du delta du Danube, de la faune et de la flore de celle-ci.

On va ainsi mettre en évidence l'importance du Danube, ce fleuve qui, aux cotés de la mer Noire, constitue l'une des composantes majeures du cadre naturel par rapport auquel nous définissons la position de la Roumanie sur le continent européen.

Le comité d'organisation de l'Expo 2012 a alloué une superficie de 414 mètres carrés (indicatif A105) au pavillon national de la Roumanie, avec pour voisins la Finlande et la Norvège.

The 3rd International Planning Meeting Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea

From February 7 to 10 is held the third international planning meeting Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea.

Early this morning, the General Secretary of the Bureau International des Expositions, Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales arrived in Seoul Airport and was immediately greeted by some lovely girls team of SNS Supporters of Expo 2012 Yeosu.

Mr. Loscertales was then asked to answer questions of two SNS Supporters ... in French, and in English.

The General Secretaryof the BIE was subsequently invited to a reception where he could make a speech.

Du 7 au 10 février se déroule la 3ème réunion internationale de planification Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea.

Tôt ce matin, le Secrétaire Général du Bureau International des Expositions, M. Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales est arrivé à l'aéroport de Séoul et a été immédiatement accueilli par quelques charmantes jeunes filles de l'équipe des SNS Supporters de Expo 2012 Yeosu.

M. Loscertales a ensuite été invité à répondre aux questions de deux jeunes filles... en français, puis en anglais.

Le Secrétaire Général du BIE a ensuite été convié à une réception, où il a pu faire un discours.

I started some time ago, with the pavilion of Korea at the 1900 World Expo. This time, I continue this series about participations of Korea in the World Expos, with the Montreal Expo in 1967, more commonly known as Expo '67.

The Republic of Korea pavilion at EXPO'67 :

The Republic of Korea Pavilion may look rather small when viewed from a distance, but it is so attractive that when visitors get close they are pratically certain to look inside.

It is on the Ile Sainte-Hélène, a mere step from the Métro Station.

The pavilion is built entirely of wood and combines the classis beauty of traditional Korean architecture and the qualities of modern design.

At its entrance a tower soars high towards the sky, an integral feature that symbolizes Korea's aspirations.

In the exhibition hall visitors meet the Korea of yesterday and today, land and people, growth and development. Special displays are devoted to Korean art through more than 4000 years ?

A large and authentic model of the world's first iron-clad warship, designed by Admiral Yi Sun-Shin in 1595, is on display as well as a replica of a 5th Century Maitreya Buddha image, the masterpiece of the Sylla Dynasty (B.C. 57-A.D. 935) Sculpture.

Manufactured goods of many kinds produced in Korea are on display, and an expert staff will be glad to answer questions.

J'avais commencé il y a déjà quelque temps, avec le pavillon de la Corée à l'Exposition de 1900. Cette fois-ci, je poursuis cette série sur les participations de la Corée dans les Expositions universelles, avec l'Exposition de Montréal en 1967, plus communément appelée Expo'67.

Le Pavillon de la République de Corée à EXPO'67 :

Entièrement construit de bois, le pavillon de la République de Corée, résume une civilisation de vingt siècles, les réalisations étonnantes du temps présent et les aspirations d'un peuple dont l'esprit est constamment tendu vers l'avenir. A l'entrée du pavillon, une tour élégante se dresse harmonieusement dans l'atmosphère orientale se dégageant de l'ensemble.

Le bâtiment est situé sur l'Ile Sainte-Hélène, non loin de la station de métro. On y développe un thème poétique – les Mains – dont l'homme se sert pour créer, se nourrir, découvrir l'univers. Ce thème, prolongé en variations à l'infini, enrichi de teintes nouvelles le grand motif : Terre des Hommes.

Un bouddha magnifique, réplique d'un bronze du 5e siècle, conservé au Musée National de Séoul, fait l'admiration de tous les visiteurs.

La Corée est également très fière de montrer au monde une reproduction à l'échelle du premier cuirassé de l'histoire, inventé par l'amiral Yi Sun-Shin, en 1595.

Une splendide collection de photos met en lumière la beauté du pays.

The German Pavilion at Expo 2012 in South Korea invites visitors on a journey from the coast to the seabed and this technology in the maritime sector.

VISIT OF GERMAN PAVILION at Expo 2012 is reminiscent of a modernized version of the famous novel by Jules Verne, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." When we moved to a replica of the platform for controlling an underwater research to go on a virtual dive to discover the largest ecological system in the world, one could easily take to the Captain Nemo aboard the Nautilus. The voyage of discovery in the deep ocean is one of the attractions of the German Pavilion at Expo in Yeosu in South Korea, from May 12 to August 12, 2012. It will host more than 100 nations, international organizations and companies. The city of 320,000 inhabitants, situated on a peninsula on the south coast of Korea, expects to receive about 8 million visitors during the event. Under the theme "For Living Ocean and Coast - Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities," Expo 2012 combines the world of discovery and presentation of scientific and technological performance.

By focusing on three areas - "Küsten" (ribs), "Lebensraum" (ecosystem) and "Schatzkammer" (resources) - Germany place its flag under the sign of entertainment and information and invites visitors to a multimedia journey from the coast to the seabed. Dietmar Schmitz, commissioner general of the German flag and head of policy and participation in exhibitions of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) explains the concept of the pavilion: "Our wide range from current aspects, such as coastal protection and overfishing, through the effects of climate change on oceans and anticipates the future, for example with models and visions for an ecological use of seabed resources. " With its participation in the exhibition, coordinated by the BMWi, Germany presents itself as a welcoming and attractive tourist country while showing its know-how and technology. According to Schmitz, "Germany has many companies and institutions worldwide leader in oceanographic research, coastal protection and development of innovative technologies. "

LA VISITE DU PAVILLON ALLEMAND à l’Expo 2012 fait penser à une version modernisée du célèbre roman de Jules Verne, « 20 000 lieues sous la mer ». Lorsque l’on s’installe à la réplique de la plate-forme de commande d’un sous-marin de recherche pour partir en plongée virtuelle, à la découverte du plus grand système écologique au monde, on pourrait facilement se prendre pour le Capitaine Nemo à bord du Nautilus. Le voyage de découverte dans les profondeurs océaniques est l’une des attractions du pavillon allemand à l’exposition universelle de Yeosu en Corée du Sud, du 12 mai au 12 août 2012. Elle accueillera plus de 100 nations, organisations internationales et entreprises. La ville de 320 000 habitants, située sur une presqu’île de la côte sud de Corée, s’attend à recevoir quelque 8 millions de visiteurs lors de cet événement. Avec sa participation à l’exposition, coordonnée par le BMWi, l’Allemagne se présente en tant que pays touristique accueillant et attrayant tout en montrant son savoir-faire et sa technicité. Selon Schmitz, « l’Allemagne compte de nombreuses entreprises et institutions leaders mondiaux en matière de recherche océanographique, de protection des côtes et du développement de technologies innovatrices. »

En se rendant au pavillon allemand, les visiteurs peuvent découvrir quelques-unes des technologies développées par l’Allemagne : navires écologiques, systèmes d’alerte précoce aux tsunamis, parcs éoliens offshore, centrales marémotrices et sondes de recherche pour les grands fonds. Ils peuvent tester leurs connaissances sur l’Allemagne en répondant à un questionnaire et faire l’expérience de la vie sur les plages de la mer du Nord et de la Baltique grâce à une mise scène multimédia d’un paysage de dunes avec fauteuils-cabines en osier. Un film d’introduction conduit les voyageurs sur la côte, leur montre comment les gens y vivent et leur donne des informations sur les grands ports allemand. Dans le troisième monde thématique du pavillon allemand, « Schatzkammer » (ressources), les visiteurs explorent les fonds marins et sont projetés dans le futur. Une expédition animée dans un véhicule futuriste conçu pour les fonds marins les transporte sur trois chantiers miniers et dans l’an 2050. Ils recueillent des informations sur les potentiels et les possibilités futures d’une exploitation écologique sous-marine de minerais, hydrates de méthane et autres ressources. Par exemple un projet sous-marin sous la direction de l’Institut Leibniz des sciences marines (IFM-GEOMAR) à Kiel. Avec 30 partenaires des secteurs de l’économie et des sciences, l’institut développe de nouvelles technologies afin d’obtenir du gaz à partir des hydrates de méthane des fonds marins et de stocker du dioxyde de carbone provenant de centrales et autres installations industrielles.

On 15 December, the organizing committee approved the logo of the Russian exposition at 2012 Yeosu Expo.
The logo consists of a cube of water, representing the four oceans, Arctic, Pacific, Atlantic and Indian.
The four oceans are closer to the Russian theme of the exhibition, itself based on four elements. Each of them can be considered individually, but together they form an understanding of perception and shape of the exhibition:

Discovery: exhibition offers a new view of the ocean and everything associated with it.
General: Ocean - the common heritage of the planet and its inhabitants living beings.
Possession: everyone can leave with a particle of the ocean without causing damage.
Security: Russia's present capabilities of water conservation of the oceans.

The external shape of the logo is a cube, as to measure the amount of precious water resources of the planet!

Le 15 décembre dernier, le comité organisateur à approuvé le logo du pavillon de la Russie à Expo 2012 Yeosu.
Ce logo est composé d'un cube d'eau, représentant les quatre océans, Arctique, Pacifique, Atlantique et Indien.
Ces quatre océans sont à rapprocher de la thématique de l'exposition Russe, elle-même fondée sur quatre éléments. Chacun d'eux peut-être considéré individuellement, mais ensemble, ils forment une compréhension de la perception et la forme de l'exposition :
Découverte : exposition offre une nouvelle vue sur l'océan et tout ce qui lui est associé.
Généralité : l'océan - le patrimoine commun de la planète et ses habitants les êtres vivants.

Yoesu Expo 2012 has found an ambassador of choice in the person of Lee Sung Hye, Miss Korea 2011.

She won the contest 3 August 2011 against 53 other competitors.
Lee Hye Sung was born in 1988 and is currently studying at the Parson School of Design in New York. She wants to have her own fashion company.
The large and beautiful Lee Hye Sung is 170 cm and is passionate about traditional dance of Korea.
She has participated in numerous activities abroad and wishes to promote the competitiveness of Korean and beauty of the country around the world.

Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea Blog

A few days ago again, I asked myself whether I was going to leave the blog online Expo 2012 Yeosu. Indeed, maintaining multiple sites and blogs of course demand a lot of work.
Although the current expo is rich enough now, it demands no less time to post new articles regularly.

Finally, with the new year, I still decided to continue on the next Expo in Yeosu ... that in a few months will open.
I took a liking to my various contacts in Korea, for this country, and I admit I greatly desire to see the doors open this exhibition in May 2012.

May is tomorrow, for this reason and because a show is always an ephemeral event in time, even if the stakes are sustainable, not after that I should communicate it.

It's a fact that while in Asia, especially Korea, people are well informed about the upcoming Expo, it's not the same in the West, in Europe for example.

It's not that communication is lacking, but communicate on a global scale requires investment out of place in an international exhibition. We are not in the field of sports where budgets are enormous.

As part of the Expos, you often do with much more reasonable budgets and shrinking of the communication itself gradually as the distance increases from the host country. It's quite understandable, in fact, visitors able to come to the Expo as far become much less numerous over the distance is great.

All people of goodwill are thanked, if they can communicate outside the borders of Korea and Asia.

So I will do my best to spread the news here on this varied Expo 2012 Yeosu, well anyway, since that is my chosen field, few historical articles on holdings of Korea in past expos, for example .

I would not forget either, regularly, to bestow upon us a few "wallpapers" with the mascots Yeony and Suny, which, as you already have noticed, the cute and irreplaceable ambassadors of Expo 2012 Yeou.

So, go in Korea, Yeosu, May 12 to August 12, 2012 ... but already on the blog.

Il y a quelques jours encore, je me posais la question de savoir si j'allais laisser en ligne le blog Expo 2012 Yeosu. En effet, tenir à jour plusieurs sites et plusieurs blogs demande bien évidemment beaucoup de travail.
Même si l'actualité des expositions est assez riche en ce moment, ça n'en demande pas moins de temps pour poster régulièrement de nouveaux articles.
Finalement, avec la nouvelle année, j'ai quand même décidé de poursuivre celui sur la prochaine Expo à Yeosu... qui dans quelques mois ouvrira ses portes.
Je me suis pris d'affection pour mes différents contacts en Corée, pour ce pays, et j'avoue avoir énormément envie de voir s'ouvrir les portes de cette exposition en mai 2012.
Mai, c'est demain, pour cette raison, et parce qu'une exposition est toujours un événement éphémère dans le temps, même si ses enjeux restent durables, ce n'est pas après que je devrais communiquer dessus.
Il est un fait que si en Asie, et surtout en Corée, les personnes sont bien informées sur l'Expo à venir, il n'en est pas de même en occident, en Europe par exemple.
Ce n'est pas que la communication fasse défaut, mais communiquer à l'échelle planétaire demande des investissements hors de propos dans le cadre d'une Exposition Internationale. Nous ne sommes pas dans les domaines du sports où les budgets sont colossaux.
Dans le cadre des Expos, il faut souvent faire avec des budgets beaucoup plus raisonnables, et cette communication s'amenuise d'elle-même au fur et à mesure que les distances augmentent par rapport au pays organisateur. C'est tout à fait compréhensible, de fait, les visiteurs à même de venir à l'Expo d'aussi loin deviennent beaucoup moins nombreuses plus la distance est grande.
Toutes les bonnes volontés sont donc remerciées, si elles peuvent communiquer en dehors des frontières de la Corée et de l'Asie.
Je vais donc faire de mon mieux pour diffuser ici de l'actualité variée sur cette Expo 2012 Yeosu, sans oublier quand même, puisque tel est mon domaine de prédilection, quelques articles historiques sur les participations de la Corée dans les Expositions passées, par exemple.
je n'oublierais pas non plus, régulièrement, de nous gratifier de quelques "wallpapers" avec les mascottes Yeony et Suny, qui sont, comme vous avez déjà pu le remarquer, des ambassadeurs aussi mignons qu'irremplaçables de cette Expo 2012 Yeou.
Donc, rendez-vous en Corée, à Yeosu, du 12 mai au 12 août 2012... mais d'ores et déjà sur le blog.

Danish pavilion at Expo 2012 Yeosu

The design and concept of the Danish pavilion at EXPO 2012 is based on the winning project “Denmark // Horizon” by COBE Architects.

“Denmark // Horizon” restores the Danish horizon and lets the visitors experience the Danish coastal life, our joy for water and water-related technical capacities. It tells the story about a modern Denmark.

The focal point of the pavilion is a circular “horizon room”, in which the visitors will find themselves encircled by a 360º projection showing a variety of selected movie sequences of the Danish sea and coast. The sensation of the coastline illustrates and brands the Danish values and know-how within the sea and coast related themes in a subtle manner, and use the “horizon” as the narrative framework for the overall concept and the storyline.

The images merge with a shiny floor that simulates a water reflection, mirroring the images and the visitors. The ceiling is constructed as an illuminated sky, which will complete the illusion of standing on the water surrounded by the Danish ocean and coast.

Five themes / five stories / five experiences

Prior to the “horizon”-room, the visitors will enter the exhibition area, where five themes/ stories/ experiences can be explored on individual exhibition walls. In an involving manner, each of these themes/ stories/ experiences will communicate examples of a sustainable Denmark.

EVOLUTION OF SHIPPING

The sea is where everything started. And to Denmark, with its 135 meters of coastline per inhabitant, the sea is also a colossal resource. More than a thousand years ago we started traveling, discovering and trading with the entire world. We made the world smaller by expanding the horizon.

WATER – A SCARCE RESOURCE

Water not only connects countries, cultures and continents. Water is also a resource – from a global perspective a scarce resource. In Denmark, careful planning, a wide horizon and a number of political, technological and infrastructural initiatives have reduced the water consumption significantly.

EVOLUTION OF WIND ENERGY

Another natural resource in Denmark is wind – lots of wind. For the last 25 years Denmark has led the global development of windmill technology. The world’s 8 largest windmill producers all have R&D facilities in Denmark. They are seeking new horizons by constantly searching for new ways of exploiting the wind – one of the most sustainable energy resources.

WALL OF CREATIVITY

Korea at Paris 1900 World Expo

Let's talk a little history, World Expo history, but especially the history of Korea's participations in the World Expos.

The first participation was in Chicago in 1893, but Korea doesn't have a real pavilion yet. The country products exhibited was gathered in a small booth that was inside the main palace of the Expo.

It wasn't until the second participation of Korea to a World Expo to see a real pavilion, which represents the country.

The first pavilion was the one of 1900 World Expo in Paris.
That we will find below is not the one expected. Indeed, it's french specialist of reconstruction , Mr. Delors de Gléon, who had a huge success at the Exhibition of 1889 with its reconstruction of the Street of Cairo. He had imagined a huge and magnificent palace to best represent Korea.

New U.S. Ambassador to Korea Sung Kim said Monday that U.S. participation in the 2012 Yeosu Expo was another important example of its deepening partnership with South Korea.

“Our relationship is more than a security partnership and encompasses many different areas like trade, people-to-people ties and, excitingly, more and more cooperation on issues of mutual concern,” Kim said.

The ambassador made the remarks during a signing ceremony for the U.S.’ participation contract with Yeosu organizing committee chief Kang Dong-suk at the envoy’s residence in downtown Seoul.

Focusing on the themes of diversity, wonder and solutions, the U.S. Pavilion at the Yeosu Expo aims to reach millions of visitors through a host of technologies and storytelling, U.S. organizers said.

“The pavilion will take relations that are so often diplomatic and trade, and create a one-on-one base, making it human and real. This is our opportunity to speak directly to Koreans,” said Philippe Cousteau, the chief spokesperson for the pavilion.

To elevate the U.S.’ involvement in the expo while highlighting its diverse coasts, the Yeosu organizing committee partnered with Cousteau, who is an explorer, social entrepreneur and environmental advocate.

Through its diversity, the pavilion plans to convey the vibrant nature of U.S. life using the voices of its people from coast to coast.

He also said the pavilion would showcase unique elements of U.S. culture and private and public initiatives that they hope will inspire personal action and positive change.

To add a personal touch, 40 college-aged U.S. student ambassadors proficient in Korean will be selected to serve as representatives, engaging directly with visitors and supporting the U.S. pavilion operation, he added.

Cousteau is the grandson of French naval explorer Jacque Cousteau, a filmmaker, scientist, photographer, researcher and inventor of the regulator used in scuba diving.

“With the legacy of my family being such a part of my life, I’m personally grateful to Korea for recognizing the importance of oceans and coast as a life support system of this planet,” Cousteau said.

To date, Yeosu has 106 participating countries for EXPO 2012 with 23 pavilions of nations and 9 international organizations, it was noted that countries wishing to participate in the expo still had until the end of November to be know.

It was also revealed some of the major events taking place during the expo, entertainment, national days, symposia and forums.

Transport and access to the Exhibition were also discussed in detail, and the facilities to come to Korea to visit the Expo and the country.

It should be noted that 2012 Yeosu makes every effort to ensure good communication outside of Asia, particularly in Europe, enlisted the services of several "ambassadors" as the actor Jacques Perrin in France.

In conclusion, this presentation was greatly appreciated by everyone, it seems to point to an Expo that will be a success, both in terms of the theme as the playful aspects of such a specific event.

Artist named honorary peace ambassador

Han Han-guk hoping to spread the message through his maps
'한석봉 후예' 한한국씨 "1000만원짜리 한지를 실수로…"

A Korean calligrapher and map artist who has been trying to spread messages of peace to the world through his art was named an honorary ambassador of world peace by the Korean government in early November.

Han Han-guk, 43, produces maps consisting of Korean words and phrases put together in the shape of a country. He has made 21 maps in all and each one contains letters, poetry and Bible passages that Han collected from people in the countries represented.

Han said he began making the maps to spread his message of peace to the world, adding that he hopes that people will one day stop generating meaningless disputes that incur unnecessary sacrifices.

“In collecting messages from people around the world for my art, I’ve been very surprised that everyone has the same hope, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, religion or culture,” Han said in an interview withe the Korea JoongAng Daily on Tuesday. “They all want to live in a place without religious or national disputes. I wanted to let them know that they have the same ideas.”

He also said it was important to him that the maps contain the history and culture of each country, which he said he believes are the keys to promoting world peace.

Han started studying calligraphy when he was eight years old. He began by studying Hanja (Chinese characters) but switched to Hangul after feeling limited by his ability to express Korean culture and emotions through Chinese characters.

“I wanted to learn and practice something that would allow me to express my pride in my mother country and for me, that was Hangul,” Han said. “Through calligraphy, I wanted to work on the subject of peace and reunification of my country, which is the long-cherished dream of Koreans.”

Financial problems made it difficult for him to continue his study because the cost of the necessary materials, including hanji (traditional Korean mulberry paper), were too expensive for him. Not to be deterred, Han came up with his own method of study.

“I threw my brush away and grabbed a stick and I used the sand at Haeundae beach in Busan as paper,” Han said “People at the beach whispered to each other and stared at me as if I were a crazy person, but I couldn’t stop practicing because it was the only thing I could do.”

Han started making peace maps in 1997, and set out to produce nine maps representing Korea’s nine provinces. He completed the project in 2005. The finished map is 1.6 meters tall (5.2 feet) and 2.6 meters wide and has 138,000 Hangul letters. The text in the maps consists of messages expressing his desire for peace, national unity, forgiveness, patriotism and reunification of the two Koreas. Some also contain stories by families in South Korea separated from relatives in the North.

In 2008, the map, which he titled “We Are One,” was sent to North Korea. It is currently on display at the International Friendship Exhibition Hall on the North’s Mount Myohyang.

Next, Han set out to produce maps of United Nations member countries, including the United States, Japan, China and Germany. He ended up creating 21 maps in all containing 1 million Hangul letters. He also created 21 ceramic plates featuring images of the peace maps that he said he wanted to donate to the peacekeeping organization. But it wasn’t an easy task.

“I wanted to donate the ceramic plates to the United Nations in order to share my message, but the UN turned me down several times because they interpreted my actions as political or because they thought I was just doing it to draw attention to myself,” Han said. “But I couldn’t give up because I believed that sending my art into the world was my destiny.”

Han said that he also set up a small table with some of his works in front of the UN General Assembly in New York to show his sincerity.

“I stayed true to my intention of spreading my message of peace, not only as an artist but also as a person living in a divided country,” Han said.

As a result of his persistence, 21 offices of UN representatives finally accepted Han’s artworks. Since then, he has received certificates of receipt from each country acknowledging his contributions. Han said that the certificates are preserved in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Han said he is currently working to produce 35 more maps and is willing to take requests from countries interested in having a Hangul map of their country.

“I will keep producing the maps in order to spread the message of peace, which is the world’s long-cherished desire,” Han said “I hope that I can devote the rest of my life to producing these maps.

“I’m currently working on producing 35 country maps and I’ll be happy to produce more for any country that is willing to have one.”

The loudest organ music ever heard will fill the air of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea, which is set to open just about 200 days later.

The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea announced that the pipe organ to be installed on the Sky Tower was tested successfully in Germany, the home of pipe organs, and is now waiting to be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the loudest pipe organ in the world.

The transformation of the abandoned cement silos in the Yeosu New Port Area into the Sky Tower started in June this year after an international design contest was held for the tower in September last year. Consisting of two 55-story towers, the Sky Tower features a pipe organ on the outside and seawater desalination facilities and a video exhibition hall inside. The rooftop observatory deck offers an expansive view of the Expo site, Odongdo (island) and the south coast archipelago.

Console construction and pipe assembly are now entering their final processes in Germany. As the test operation of the pipe organ proved that the sound of the organ can be heard from as far as 6 kilometers away, the Organizing Committee hopes it will be recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s loudest pipe organ.

The pipe organ will be used to signal the opening and closing times of the Expo site during the Expo period as well as to play the national anthems of the participating countries and to play music for on-site concerts, among others.

Hong Seung-pyo, a professor at Hankyong University who came up with the idea of the pipe organ, said, “Although pipe organs tend to be built indoors and played for religious purposes, I wanted to challenge this convention. I brought out this idea of installing a pipe organ outside of the tower so that it could more deeply connect with Expo visitors by allowing them to not only hear the organ but play it themselves.”

Yang Hong-ju, Head of the Sky Tower Project Team of the Organizing Committee, commented, “I am confident that the Sky Tower pipe organ will become one of the Yeosu Expo’s landmarks, along with the tower’s rooftop observatory deck offering a breathtaking view of the Expo site and Yeosu and the seawater desalination facilities.

The Pipe Organ to Be Installed on the Sky Tower

With the official opening of the Expo only about 200 days away, construction of the Expo site is making fair progress. To date, 75 percent is completed. A total of 103 nations and eight international bodies have confirmed their participation in the Expo. In addition, the Suncheon-Wanju Expressway and the Jeolla KTX railway are now in full operation.

Yeosu Expo Promotion in Indonesia Is Spurred by the Korean Wave

The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea is “aggressively” promoting the Expo in Indonesia.

The Organizing Committee held a press conference with major local media of Indonesia at the Ritz-Carlton Jakarta on September 29 and gave a presentation for product development managers of local travel agencies at the Jakarta office of the Korea Tourism Organization on September 30.

Yeosu Expo promotion booths have also been set up at two international events, the 2nd Indonesia Blue Revolution Expo & Forum held at the Jakarta Convention Center from October 6 to 9 and the 2011 Surabaya Marine Expo being held in Surabaya from October 7 to 9.

Yeony and Suny, the official mascots of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea, are gaining popularity in Indonesia thanks to “Hallyu,” or Korean Wave. During the Korea-Indonesia Week, organized by the Korean Embassy in Indonesia and held from September 28 to October 4 in Jakarta, the Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea held an event where visitors could take pictures with Yeony and Suny. The mascots personify a drop of water and plankton respectively, embodying the theme of Yeosu Expo, “The Living Ocean and Coast.”

OCBPA Participants Made a Site Visit

The Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea announced that relevant participants from home and abroad made a site visit to the Ocean & Coast Best Practice Area (OCBPA).

The Organizing Committee said that participants, such as Samsung Heavy Industries, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., STX, K-Water, Northwest Pacific Action Plan, and Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystem, were given information on the plans and current status of exhibition preparations and underwent technical negotiations with the Organizing Committee.

The site visit began with a tour of the Yeosu Expo 2012 Promotion Center for updates on the current preparation status of the Expo, then moved on to the OCBPA located on the second floor of the Theme Pavilion for insights on the surrounding conditions and the exhibition space. An overall briefing on the progress of OCBPA exhibition plans was held later on, followed by technical negotiations between the participants and the Organizing Committee.

“We hope the site visit allowed the participants to get a clear picture of the theme and purpose of Yeosu Expo, and I am glad that technical negotiations went well thanks to the briefing on well-prepared exhibition plans,” said Kang Hyun-joo, Deputy Director General of the OCBPA Department. “We also hope that participants speed up their efforts to further develop their exhibition contents after their site visit.”

The OCBPA is scheduled to be completed by March 2012. It will focus not only on the world’s top technologies but also today’s best policies and knowhow, regarding the oceans and coasts. At the communication lab inside the OCBPA, a series of special lectures are to be given to provide in-depth knowledge about relevant issues.

U.S. confirms pavilion at Yeosu Expo

The United States announced that it is joining the 108 countries and international organizations taking part in the 2012 Yeosu Expo.

The U.S. Embassy said that its pavilion will build upon the expo’s theme of “The Living Ocean and Coast,” and showcase the diversity, spirit of entrepreneurship, innovation, and commitment to sustainable development of the American people.

“This demonstrates the U.S.’ commitment to deepening our friendly ties and strengthening U.S.-Korea relations and engagement in the Asia-Pacific region,” the embassy’s press statement said.

The USA Pavilion 2012’s design and day-to-day operation will be led by explorer, environmentalist and social entrepreneur Philippe Cousteau Jr., grandson of Jacques Cousteau.

It will house a 12,000-square foot exhibit featuring the United States’ shoreline through displays and programs that highlight the diverse nature of America’s waters and coastal communities.

Focusing on the themes of diversity, wonder and solutions, the USA Pavilion is expected to reach millions of visitors through a host of technologies and storytelling.

A highlight of the American Pavilion experience for visitors will be interaction with student ambassadors.

In partnership with the University of Virginia, 40 college-aged American student ambassadors proficient in the Korean language will be selected to serve as representatives of the United States, engaging directly with visitors and supporting the operation of the USA Pavilion.

Background

Oceans and coasts are not only the origin of life on Earth, but also a rich repository of biological diversity and a foundation for human survival. However, indiscriminate development and exploitation of these resources such as discharge of pollutants into the ocean, over-fishing and damages of coral reefs pose significant threats and stress to the marine environment, calling for needs to formulate ways to protect them.
The Yeosu Declaration, pursued as part of the legacy of the Yeosu Expo is intended not only to enhance the awareness of dangers faced by the sea but also to promote the necessity of international cooperation for turning these challenges into hopes for the future. The year 2012 is a significant year in terms of human efforts to pursue sustainable development. It is the 40th anniversary of the Stockholm Declaration, the 30th anniversary of the Nairobi Declaration, the 20th anniversary of the Rio Declaration and the 10th anniversary of the Johannesburg Declaration. In this respect, the Yeosu Declaration will celebrate humanity’s efforts to find sustainable ways to develop the ocean, and create an international consensus in support of the Expo’s theme, “The Living Ocean and Coast.”

Action Plans for 2011-2012

As an international manifesto, the Yeosu Declaration will be jointly developed in consultation with marine experts from home and abroad, including those from international organizations. The draft created in 2010 will be elaborated and reviewed by an international panel of experts from various fields. Strategy

Green Exposition
In the spirit of the theme of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea, all preparations and events will leave a limited carbon footprint, and the Energy Park will become the test-bed for renewable energy. The entire Expo site will be constructed with environmentally-friendly methods and recycled materials to produce the least amount of waste possible.

Ubiquitous Exposition
The construction and operation of the Expo facilities and exhibitions will be based on Korea’s cutting-edge information technology. Visitors will have the chance to indulge in novel experiences, involving virtual and augmented reality. The Expo Digital Gallery, among others, will be representative of the ubiquitous Expo.

Design Exposition

Every facility of the Yeosu Expo will be based on the most inspirational and contemporary designs. Major facilities, including the Korean Pavilion and the Thematic Pavilion, will be based on the winning designs of an international competition hosted for this very purpose. Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities

The main theme of Yeosu Expo, "The Living Ocean and Coast", conceptualizes the most desirable future for the ocean whose sound preservation and well-being is essentially linked with the survival of humankind.

“Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities” defines the guiding principle that should inform all future actions regarding our oceans. Only with sustainable use, in other words finding the balance between production and consumption, while preserving diversity of resources, species and culture, can the ocean and coasts continue to live.

Background of the Theme

The Expo theme will help shed light on humankind’s knowledge and advancement of technology concerning the ocean and coast and identify ways to resolve challenges facing the ocean. Since the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea went into effect in 1993, the ocean has emerged as an important element in resolving various problems humankind faces, including those related to resources, food, space and the environment. However, industrial activities have damaged the marine ecosystem and subsequently reduced fish stocks. As a result, the ocean faces severe crisis. A damaged marine ecosystem, global warming and natural disasters are not limited to a certain country or region, but are issues that have global implications. Thus, Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea themed on “The Living Ocean and Coast,” will pave the way for reaffirming global effort to resolve such issues.

Yeosu Expo’s theme, “The Living Ocean and Coast,” was divided into three sub-themes: Coastal Development and Preservation, New Resources Technology, and Creative Maritime Activities. These sub-themes have been further developed into 6 thematic groups, namely, Climate & Environment, Marine Life, Marine Industry & Technology, Marine City & Marine Civilization, and Marine Arts, each of which will be demonstrated in the respective sub-theme pavilions.

Sub-themes

Coastal Development and Preservation
This sub-theme aims to inspire a new level of cooperation in the international community so as to combat climate change and create a paradigm where development and preservation find a better balance.
The last few decades have witnessed severe environmental degradation caused by reckless use and excessive development of natural resources by humankind. Our economies and societies must break away from their current fossil fuel-based economies to minimize the damages to both people and the environment. Today, individuals, businesses, countries and the global community must realize that marine resources are limited and should not be subject to careless use. They are the fundamentals for the sound development of our future society, and people and ecosystems must be considered on the same level.

New Resources Technology
This sub-theme illustrates the progress and future prospects of marine technology, a new growth driver for the advancement of humankind.
Countries are competing to become more competitive in marine-related industries and develop technologies to address issues related to resources and the changing environment. The discreet use of resources, which strikes a balance between development and preservation, is only possible if based on advanced marine science and technology. Fostering marine industries will create added value and generate new jobs to transform sluggish industries into low cost, high efficiency structures.

Creative Maritime Activities
This sub-theme intends to demonstrate the relationship between the oceans and humankind through culture and art and promote the new ideals of the seatizen and seavilization.
An energetic mix of play and experience (edutainment) will trigger the imagination and curiosity of attendees towards an unknown world, inspiring young boys and girls around the world to learn to love and appreciate the oceans. A wide collection of marine-related culture and arts, including poetry, novels, films, operas, musicals, plays and music will be exhibited at the Yeosu Expo.

Thematic pavilion - Yeosu 2012

As you probably know, is the project's architectural firm SOMA who won the competition for the theme pavilion of the exhibition of 2012 Yeosu.

We will see in detail what this building will look like.

Design Concept
The pavilion theme was designed to be a permanent building while embodying many ways the theme of the exhibition is: "For coastal and ocean living." We experience the ocean in two main ways, as an endless surface and as the prospect of plunging. This dual flat / deep ocean behind this concept and organizational space of the building. The continuous surfaces twist a vertical orientation to a horizontal orientation. The vertical stress cones visitors to dive into the thematic exhibition. They operate in horizontal levels that cover the home and become a flexible stage for the "Best Practices Area".
The continuous transitions between contrasting experiences also form the exterior of the Pavilion. Towards the sea, the conglomerate of cones defines a new solid vertical sinuous line, an edge that is flexible changing between water and land. On the opposite side of the pavilion grows out of the earth in an artificial landscape, a roof with gardens and picturesque paths.

Urban context
The building will be erected in a former industrial port along a new walkway adjacent to the "Big O". This bridge will connect the pavilion at the Expo. After the Expo this walk will turn into an "urban beach" by providing recreational activities to the public.

Program and traffic
The main entrance is located on Ocean Plaza, which is partially covered by the flag and to have a shaded outdoor area. The space limitations of fireplace are defined by the twisting surfaces of the cones. The interstitial spaces between them frame the ocean view and create niches for visitors who will want to take a break. The area before the show, during the show and after the show is spatially modulated: To start the spectators come slowly through the first two cones of a ceiling height of 8m, then they enter the main room, a huge area 1000 m2 with 20 meters high. After the show, people arrive in the area after the show lower and more intimate that leads to the cafeteria and an island open to the ocean, where they can relax and watch the movement of the ocean. Visitors can take the escalator to the second floor, where the area of Best Practices ahead. Here institutions will present their research in areas such as renewable energy or marine technology. The roof is the third exhibition space, which invites people to relax and enjoy a 360 degree view of the Expo site. The gardens on the roofs will be covered plant species from local ratings. To leave the pavilion, visitors will travel a long winding ramp with a panoramic view of the ocean and surrounding islands.
Service functions, such as offices, technical areas and storage areas are located underneath the landscape of the building.

After the period of the EXPO building will house public and educational facilities.

Bionic kinetic facade - the effects of waves
As a virtual multimedia performances during the exhibition theme, the front kinetics, as the overall architecture of the pavilion, evokes sensual experiences.
In addition to their oversight function of light intensity and air flow in the lobby area and best practices, the movement creates the strips moving patterns on the facade. The choreography will bring up the subtle movements of waves along the length of the building.

This movement of the blades is reminiscent of the movement and function of the gills of a poison, which is most impressive is that sense of life of the building, we will see "breathe."

After sunset, the visual effect of the movement of blades is accentuated by linear bar made of LEDs, which are located on the inside of the front edge of the coverslip. The slide in the open position, the LED can illuminate the neighboring strip according to the angle. The principle of bionics plates produces a constant geometry, material, movement and light are perfectly linked. As a movement, emotional experience of the facade combines kinetic sensation sensational communicating with the theme of the EXPO as an innovative way and investigation.

Climatic design
The lobby area and best practices are naturally ventilated. Therefore, the interstitial spaces between the cones were oriented in the direction of prevailing winds to create drafts. In large vertical exposures, the air will be distributed through the floor to reduce the amount of volume of air conditioning. During the day, the strips kinetics are used to control the amount of light. These strips are activated by the energy generated by solar panels on the roof. The building's energy performance has been analyzed by detailed simulations to reduce energy consumption and increase efficiency.

Structure
The different appearance of the pavilion - open to the Expo site and closed to the sea, were also defined according to the constraints of the site. Facing the sea, the cones reinforced concrete can prevent the roof for damages related to typhoons and high waves. The roof and facade kinetics have a substructure of steel. The kinetic facade will be produced from FRP Reinforced Polyester (Fiberglass) and uses the material properties and flexibility for its operation.

The Exposition will be a chance to induce and urge cooperation and joint efforts from the international community. In particular, the Yeosu Project will offer a golden opportunity for resolving imminent ocean-related problems facing developing countries.

WASHINGTON (Yonhap News) -- In an announcement timed for South Korean President Lee Myung-bak's state visit, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Thursday that her country will take part in a large-scale maritime festival to be held in the Asian nation's southwestern coastal city next year.

"I'm proud to announce another new venue for cooperation: The United States will host a pavilion at the 2012 Yeosu World Expo in partnership with Philippe Cousteau Jr.," Clinton said at a state luncheon for the president and First Lady Kim Yoon-ok at the White House. Lee and President Barack Obama had summit talks earlier in the day.

The secretary was referring to a famed environmentalist and social entrepreneur.

She appreciated support from businesses for sponsorship of the public-private project.

The Yeosu expo is slated to take place from May 12 through Aug. 12 in 2012. The event, which 108 countries and international organizations will attend, is expected to draw several million visitors.

The State Department said in a press release that "participation in this expo demonstrates U.S. commitment to strengthening U.S.-ROK relations and engagement in the Asia-Pacific region and deepens our friendly ties with the people of the Republic of Korea."

French Yeosu pavilion stresses ocean’s future

The French Embassy unveiled its plans for the French pavilion at the Yeosu World Expo next year.

As its theme, the French government has chosen “France, its Coasts, its Oceans” and also unveiled their mascot for the expo named Sogeumi.

“Korea and France are both countries with a high respect for the ocean,” said French Ambassador Elisabeth Laurin during a press conference.

“In France we have over 1,900 kilometers of coastal waters, so there is a lot of affinity between the two countries and their people in subjects like the environment, high technology. That’s what we will find at our pavilion,” she added.

Organizers of the world expo are predicting that 3 million visitors will attend, of which about half a million will be from abroad.

The French Embassy is hoping to attract 1 million visitors to its pavilion with the goal of presenting the country as a maritime superpower.

Visitors to the French pavilion will learn about the different beautiful spots found along the country’s coast.

The pavilion will also showcase French desalination technology. The French contingency will demonstrate the different processes seawater goes through before being transformed into drinkable water by using an animated version of their mascot Sogeumi.

The front side of the pavilion is made up of 300 hourglasses filled with moving salt to illustrate the time remaining before the world’s supply of drinking water is exhausted.

Once inside, visitors will follow Sogeumi on his journey.

In another room, visitors will see a small scale replica of the Sea Orbiter, a floating research laboratory intended to observe ocean life.

There will also be humanoid and aquatic robots peppered throughout the 845 square meter pavilion.

The expo will run from May 12 to Aug. 12 at the Yeosu New Port and Deokchung-dong, South Jeolla Province.

Asiana Airlines sponsors Yeosu 2012 Expo

Asiana Airlines signed on as an official sponsor of International Exposition Yeosu Korea 2012 on Sunday.

A contract making Asiana Airlines an official sponsor was signed by the company’s chief executive Yoon Young-doo and chief of the Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea Kang Dong-suk at the Asiana Airlines lounge in Incheon International Airport on Sunday.

The Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea will be held from May 12 to Aug. 12.

Under the contract, Asiana Airlines will provide discounts on tickets and take part in promoting the event including showing promotional videos on its flights, and printing Yeosu expo’s logo and slogan on tickets for domestic flights.

Canada refuses the invitation of South Korea

Canada formally declined the invitation of South Korea to participate in Expo 2012, saying its financial position does not allow him to participate in this international event.

A Canadian businessman wants Ottawa to change its mind

A report from the Harris-Decima commissioned by Heritage Canada after Canada's participation in Shanghai World Expo in 2010 indicated that the land of the maple leaf was not a main attractions of these international events .

A total of 246 countries and international organizations participated in the Expo 2010. A record 73 million visitors went there, but Canada was not a priority to stop them, said the report.

The flags of Japan, the United States, France, Germany and England were the most popular.

Interest in the Canadian pavilion, however, increased when the artisans of Cirque du Soleil arrived, the report said.

"The superficial knowledge of Canada, Canadians and the uniqueness of their country hinders the interest in its flag," is written in the report.

Pavilion of China chose the dolphin as mascot

The China Pavilion at Expo 2012 in Yeosu in South Korea chose the humpback dolphin Indo-Pacific as a mascot, announced Wednesday the Preparatory Committee of the China Pavilion.

The theme of the China Pavilion will demonstrate the country's efforts to use the sea in a scientific manner, with an emphasis on the protection of the marine environment and the relationship between man and the ocean, said Zhao Zhen'ge , Assistant General Secretary of the Preparatory Committee of the Flag of China and Chinese government representative at the Exposition.

The China Pavilion will cover an area of 1241 square meters and will be the largest foreign flag of the Exhibition.

The centerpiece of the pavilion is a theater, which will be shown a film about humpback dolphins endangered. Other projects will present China's efforts to protect the marine environment and marine technology.

The BIE Secretary General Meets Prime Minister Kim Hwang-Sik

The Secretary General of the BIE, Vicente G. Loscertales met the Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, Kim Hwang-Sik, during his visit to Seoul on May 11th 2011.

The Secretary General spoke of the importance of the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea and its theme "The Living Ocean and Coast" and praised the efforts of the organisers to realise a successful exhibition. Furthermore, he referred to the need for concerted efforts for a global communication of Expo Yeosu and its theme, especially in light of the current international efforts to overcome the serious challenges related to the environment. The Secretary General noted that a reinforced participation of corporations to the exhibition would increase the level of innovation capacity and technological capacities.

In turn, Prime Minister Kim reiterated the support of the Korean Government for the hosting of Expo 2012 Yeosu.

Prime Minister Kim visited the city of Yeosu on May 12th, one year before the opening of the Expo, to chair the 10th Committee Meeting on Governmental Support for the Expo.

MVRDV shared with us their design of The Water Cube, a pavilion for the World Expo 2012 in Yeosu, Korea. The theme of the Expo is “The Living Ocean and Coast”. You can see more proposals for the thematic pavilion by Ginseng Chicken, PTA, and Nicoletti Associati.

WORLD WONDERS
World expos are fantastic. In the literal meaning. They show man kinds fantasies. They allow for this great opportunity to express excitement and admiration. The past has given a series of true world wonders that express that rare combination of entertainment and education, of research and achievement, like the Eifel Tower in Paris, the Sphere at the NY expo, the Montreal Habitat building, Buckminsterfullers dome in Montreal. What to add to this history? Can the chosen theme lead to a new powerful object?

THE WATER CUBE
The world expo in Yeosu focuses on the power and beauty of the oceans. How to express that the best? Could it be done by – simply- making a pure visible block of water that obviously expresses the beauty and the power? A block that is extracted from the ocean.

THE WATER SPACE
This block is hollowed out, to create a great water space, where one is surrounded by water. Along the sides, above and below. Where light filters through and give every activity a glance. That can be used for the exhibitions, the gatherings, during and after the world expo. One is in the water.

THE WATER FACADE
The water cube is constructed out of a surrounding wall with a series of water basins that are stacked on top of each other. Based on the maximum structural capacities of the glass facades and floors. It allows showing all the different aspects of the oceans! The façade turns into a mini museum, into a library of the oceans!

THE HALL OF THE OCEANS
Thus the central water space turns into a cathedral like space that celebrates the oceans. With all the environmental differences in the world. The deep sea, the tropical parts, the mangroves, the reefs, etcetera.

THE WORLD MAP
The basins are organized like a world map. So that any different sea can be shown and positioned clearly: the polar seas on top and the bottom, and the tropical parts in the middle. The coast lines of the contents are clearly expressed on the facade. They separate the ocean aquaria from the dryer coastal terrarium within the continents.

STRUCTURE
The walls between the basins and the coastal walls together with the ramping track form the structural web in which the water basins can be positioned. The continents have more closed elements in the façade and thus contain the stability elements. The roof is constructed with 5 meter high beams that span from the supporting web towards the centre of the roof: the North Pole.

ECOLOGY
The refreshment between the basins is organized in such a manner that it simulates the movements of the oceans. The cleaning devices are positioned in between the basins. Thus the ocean ecology is expressed and used.

ENERGY
The skin of the building is designed out of four layers of glass, with water in between. The fresh sea water from outside is constantly pumped into the basin to keep the circulation through the building. Thus the water basins are used as a natural temperature adapter for the hall of the oceans. This simulates the temperature role of the ocean for the planet.

The skin contains elements to control the raise of temperature for the basins. These elements contain rolling curtains to control the UV penetration, and solar PV cells to create energy for the water circulation and the light of the building.

THE OCEAN TRACK
A ramping path that is accessible for handicapped climbs along the facades of the cube. It serpentines through the different basins with the different environments. It becomes a track though the oceans richness. It turns the skin into a library and into a museum.

ACCESS
One can access the building from the dam, via an underwater tube that ends at the South Pole, where it appears in the bottom floor. Glass lifts and stairs are designed penetrating the water basin.

CIRCULATION
At the entrance hall people are guided in to the lifts that bring the visitors up to the top floor. On the top floor the visitors are guided towards the North Pole bar with a spectacular view over the expo. From here one can find its journey along the basins, via the main oceans track or via the stairs and lifts, easily descending from the top to the bottom. One ends in the main hall that gives the spectacular overview over all the experiences that can be seen as the introduction for the exhibits and gatherings in the hall of the oceans. Via an escalator the visitor goes down via the South Pole to the pipe that leads him or her to the main land.

THE LANTERN IN THE OCEAN
The different basins are illuminated each in its specific way according to the demands. A pattern of light can be created according the day and night pattern of the planet. Thus the water cube becomes a true endlessly changing magic water lantern.

AFTER USE
This design allows for a flexible usage afterwards, while keeping the memory of the expo. This hall can turn easily be adapted to a theatre, a concert hall into a ceremonial space, into a museum, even it could become an office building, a town hall.

Opening of the portal website of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea

The official website of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea opened anew as a portal website introducing the "Southern Coast Travel Planner System".
The Organizing Committee said on December 29 that, with 500 days remaining until the opening of the event, its website would be upgraded and supplemented with information related to the Expo, and its contents would help Internet users to plan their trips to the southern coastal areas of Korea, where the host city of the Expo is located.

With this new website portal, Internet users can have a list of the recommended travel itineraries and reserve accommodation. An all in one now possible, by entering the number of passengers, type of accommodation, food preferences, travel objective and finally the destination. The recommended itineraries are created by tourism professionals, while the restaurants and the proposed accommodation are accredited by the Organizing Committee after a rigorous selection process.

The portal website contains a real-time view of the construction on the Expo site and has a "community" which is the visitor-designed space on the website.

The opening of the portal website marks the first stage of website renovation which is aimed at promoting tourism in Korea's southern coast region. The Organizing Committee will continue to upgrade its website with features such as the Cyber Expo and customized services including the transportation guide.

The English, Chinese, Japanese and French versions of the portal website will be launched in the second half of 2011.
